The state was excised from Kano State. It covers a total la nd area of about 22,410sq km. It is bordered on the West by Kano State and on the North by Katsina State and the Republic of Niger, providing a unique opportunity for cross-border trading activities.

The State is mainly populated by the Hausa/Fulani tribes. There are other settled tribes from within and outside Nigeria, inhabiting the 27 Local Government Areas of the State. The rich cultural heritage of the people is reflected in their mode of dressing, music, dance craftsmanship and hospitality.
